Getting Fit
Not all of us have the motivation or drive to make that initial step to maintain our physical well-being, let alone think about it, even if the good intentions are there. Looking back and reflecting on childhood, it’s amazing how much energy we once had; how we could run and play for hours and hours without feeling tired and exhausted. So why have we stopped? Well, “not having the time” is the most common excuse… but why have we allowed this to happen? Another reason is that we don’t all enjoy playing sport or participating in an activity we’re either not good at or just don’t have interest in. It is important, however, to ensure that we do not abuse our bodies or take for granted that we will just tick along.
Taking up exercise on a regular basis is the first step towards an active life. First of all you need to choose a method that is right for you, whether that be having your own personal trainer, joining a gym or training at home/outdoors. It’s important that you choose good surroundings to work out in, as this will encourage you to keep up with your exercise program and help you focus on your goals. It’s probably a good idea to invest in a diary so you can plan your training schedule one week ahead. Incorporate a variety of activities to prevent boredom and keep a daily log of how long you exercised for, what you did and how you felt. Also record the intensity level and whether you found it hard or easy as it can be very motivating to look back and see the results - don’t be afraid to give yourself a big pat on the back for doing so well!
Although you will start to notice some changes to your body through exercising, it’s vitally important not to overlook other aspects of your lifestyle. Think about adopting a healthy eating lifestyle and a positive outlook on life, as these factors both contribute to your overall well-being. Exercise doesn’t have to be dull; be creative - there are plenty of fun activities that you can choose from such as roller-blading, skipping, playing cricket and so on. Finally, live life to the full - there is so much out there to explore and, as the saying goes, “the world is your oyster!”
